State government pushes new educational reforms

On October 26, the Pennsylvania Senate approved Senate Bill 1, which uses taxpayer money to fund vouchers for students already enrolled in private schools. This bill, along with others, has been the cause of heated controversy. [more]

Protesting for a cause: Occupy Wall Street FAQ

As legislators from around the world threaten to quash the overnight activities of Occupy Wall Street protestors, opinion on whether or not the movement is noble or negligent remains divided. In an attempt to change the hearts and minds of those either opposed or dismissive of the movement, I have assembled some frequently asked questions, with the hope that facts shall truly alter the people’s perspective of Occupy Wall Street. LM welcomes "junk" to the courtyard

Prior to the construction of the new high schools, the LM and Harriton Alumni Association asked both high schools if they would accept an artistic donation. Both LM and Harriton accepted the offer and the Alumni Association searched for an artist. Eventually they chose Leo Sewell, a well-known local sculptor, to create two sculptures. [more]

Christmas Village 2010

Get lost in Philadelphia's Christmas village

The “Village” is a German Christmas Market that opens up shop in front of City Hall every holiday season from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve. With over fifty vendors one can buy just about anything, making it the perfect place to buy gifts for the holiday season. This year I decided to return, and two burnt crepes, a few pigeon attacks, many wrong turns later, I think I’ve got a handle on the Christmas Village. [more]

Athletic Aces look to elevate above the rim and above the competition

After the exciting boys’ soccer season unfortunately came to its end, the Dawg Pound once again has reason for excitement. After last basketball season, when seniors dressed up like superheroes on game nights, this year’s fan section is left with a difficult act to follow in matching last year’s spirit. The same goes for the Aces team. [more]

Facilitate Excellence

When I was a lowly freshman, LM’s weight room was located across the hall from the Downs Gym, in a crowded, poorly ventilated, moldy room that carried a stench heavier than all of its rusted dumbbells combined. The treadmills and ellipticals had all been relocated to the secret room inside the cafeteria, and the stationary bicycles to the basement of the Tech Building. The equipment was scarcely used by anyone other than Mr. Bomze and the football team. The trainer’s room had four beds, one working ice machine, a cockroach infestation, and not a single tub for ice baths or whirlpools. Finally, due to construction, LM lost close to half a dozen playing fields. [more]

Becoming familiar with family

Grandpa Joe drinks too much and has decided to tear around the neighborhood on his walker. Aunt Tracy is going through her third divorce and can’t stop telling everyone how miserable it is. Your cousins are so obnoxious you want to sock them all. On the surface, extended family seems like nothing more than a group of eccentric people that you’re forced to see over the holidays. I dread Thanksgiving every year, because it’s filled with making cheap small talk, spending long hours socializing with crazy people, and parents hissing at me for acting morose. Until recently, I couldn’t say I knew much more about any of my relatives than their names. [more]

Sophomores babysit to benefit class

Parents Night Out

On December 3, LMHS rang with the chatter and laughter of children as the class of 2014 held its biggest fundraiser of the year: Parents Night Out. The event, described on flyers as “a fun night filled with movies, board games, open gym, arts and crafts and more,” lasted from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., and was considered a great success, with around seventy children present. Parking spots to free up as construction comes to a close

Central administration parking

After three years of renovation, beginning in the summer of 2008, LMHS is finalizing the construction process with the completion of the parking lot. LM started by tearing down the old school, continued with the construction of the new school, and is now finishing the restoration of the Administration Building. With the constant sound of drilling and hammering, and the view of massive machines seen from the windows of our school, it has been hard for both the faculty and the students; specifically, it has come to the student body’s attention that the “Parking Spot Lottery” will be delayed for another month. From complex to simple: debt crisis for dummies

Debt crisis

When words such as “debt” and “deficit” come up, it is usually connoted with negative terms such as “bankruptcy,” “crisis,” and “excessive government spending.” But to understand the logistics of the debt crisis of an entire country (or continent!), it is important to first understand what “debt crisis” actually means. Although we hear about the “world economic crisis” quite frequently via the media, many of us don’t truly understand the logistics behind those words. [more]

BuildOn's Trek to raise $66,000…and on to Haiti

Devastation hit Haiti in January 2010 after an earthquake with a 7.0 magnitude changed the lives of over 3 million people. From May 12 through the 26, eighteen “Trekkies” from our school will be going to Haiti to help build a school outside of a town called Les Cayes, located 95 miles southwest of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince. Holiday movies throughout the years

Holiday movies

Maybe it was the unusually warm weather or the delay in the NBA, but somehow the 2011 holiday season has snuck up on us. It feels like we were just finishing Thanksgiving leftovers when cars began to drive by with Christmas trees strapped to the top. With all of the typical high school melodramas plaguing our everyday lives, it can be hard to remember to enjoy December’s holiday cheer. This is why I am presenting you a list of the top ten holiday movies that have appeared throughout the years that encapsulate the true spirit of the holidays. [more]

Modern day appeal in 19th century literature

For most people, reading a novel that takes place in 1800s England does not spark much excitement. However, from murder to secret affairs to strong desire, novels like Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen are the opposite of boring. These timeless stories have remained popular for over 150 years and are cultural icons. They are uniquely focused on strong female characters that lived in a time where marriage and manners were all that mattered for women. [more]

LM Swim hopes to see support and "add some W's" thanks to strong commitment

Swim

With the 2011–2012 winter sports season underway, there is a lot of talk in regards to the boys’ and girls’ swim teams. Previously split up amongst four different teams—boys’ swimming, girls’ swimming, boys’ diving, and girls’ diving—the squads combined this year to encompass all aspects of aquatic competition.
